Common sense tells us it is alcohol - research, read, watch documentaries, you will be amazed at the chain of events started by alcohol prohibition!
Alcohol for many is not a gateway. They learn to drink in moderation.
For others it does not always lead to other drugs - it can be enough - hence,
Alcoholics Anonymous. It can create generations of abuse in some families.
It blows my mind Cannabis was ever classified as a far dangerous drug over Alcohol.
I am familiar with both and alcohol was my gateway drug.
