Painting Fungi!

Painting 'Artist Conk' - Fungi is different to put it mildly.
The saw blade was interesting to paint- and I have another waiting as I type!
There is no canvas as interesting as a FUNGI. I've painted several over the years.
My mom has a painted one that is at least 30 years old. The fungi has it's own life and it lends to what will be painted on it!! I'll share a few things I've learned though over the years.
Norm recently came across a bin that was full of these shrooms! They were collected  when we had our cottage, they were dried and I had primed the surface to paint- I think this was a good thing. Put in a box when we sold and forgot about for about 15 years. lol

I believe priming the surface is what kept them safe- well almost all of them.
First let me tell you - They are not an easy surface to paint on - you will not accomplish the detail you would get on a canvas - well- almost. Most were originally just scratched into with a sharp object, mine are primed and painted exactly like a canvas and then sprayed a final protecting coat.
You have to be careful of critters, I lost a couple to something as you can see they were eaten from the inside out, some - you can not tel by simply looking but they are very light - give them tap and they fall apart.  The ones that are still fine are quite heavy.
I am so excited to paint my next big one- it has a river on it naturally- I look at what iI had started years ago - and it's childish . This next one will not be, it will be a nature scene for our own home. I don't know when I'll find another beauty like this- and thats 1/2 the battle.

From what I understand it does not hurt the tree- BUT if you are not going to paint - don't pick it! Just remember where it is and go and watch the canvas grow! Leave nature where it is. I don't think I'll pick any new now, I have a few left to paint & numerous canvas
from DeSerres- not 1/2 the hunt. lol.  Have a peek below a few photos taken this a.m.

The small one I have started I will draw for. The contest will ONLY be open to Canadians as- I am not sure about mailing.  I'll keep it simple. So if you are here- you have a head's up! Stay tooned for more details on the free giveaway soon! Time to get out and get back at it!

Have faith!
