If you had to compare me to an artist who would it be?
Please don't say Picasso.. I'm not a fan of the man - some art I like.
In the past I have been told my work reminds others of 'Vincent Van Gogh & was usually considered an insult, only because of the madness... or rather the depresson.
If I had to compare me - NOW - I'd say Vincent - in too many ways. Not all pleasant.
I've been watching all I can on the man for several days - I love his work- I can replicate his work with ease and have many times over the years, my last sunflower painting I gave to a woman who was dying fom cancer & I remember she said she looked at it all the time because it made her feel better, calmer - art does that - especially the art of a "mad man" brings many peace from just looking at it.
It can also do the opposite. Vincent Van Gogh was known for being one of the few that painted the truth he witnessed around him - ugly, depressing truth in between beautiful sunflowers & cherry blossoms. He judged few- this obvious when he was in love & cared for a prostitute & her children but he was judged by many all the same... Aren't we all.
I learned his mother had Vincent at a time in her life when she was very depressed as she had just lost a baby boy- also name Vincent, he did not get the love or attention he needed as an infant because she was still suffering from grief & depression & some suspect it was part of his problems all his life. I've researched this and it is true - scientifically proven, when infants don't get love or touched - it can cause seriousl life long issues. The same situation happened when I arrived, my mom had just lost a baby son not long before I was born - the timing was not good. My grandma named me, I was told my mom didn't have it in her at the time & I might have ended up with 'Eggbert instead of 'Georgia (thanks Nanny).
Learning about this Monkey Study actually HELPED me heal.
Monkeys Helped me understand... it had little to do with me & more about timing.
I found about this study after trying to figure out why I have issues with a few things like abandonment & struggles with depression. Vincent painted because he felt he had to - I feel the same - all I can think about is getting away into nature to paint these days & it's all I do from the moment I wake - it's why I am moving to more trees & less humans - it's all that seems to brings me peace. Vincent liked to write letters (as do I) thankfully - it helped make him who he is today - by educating us all on his talent & mental illness.
Now Art Historians, Professors, art experts & even Dr.s confirm quite the opposite... he was far from crazy he was a genius who suffered with mental illness, had he been able to receive help he might have lived longer & created many more masterpieces. The amount alone he painted has inspired me to get out my brushes today & a canvas as well.
Don't let anyone 'label you. TRY to figure stuff out & you might be amazed... It's kinda quite normal those feelings of dread in your head. Don't be so hard on yourself.
I've started a new Vincent tribute painting - combining two of his painting.. I think your gonna love it. NFS. Who inspired you? I have added Going to the Van Gogh Museum to my bucket list! Mental illness, I think we ALL experience it to some degree in our lives, several times, ALL of us.
I embrace it as a of detail of all that is Georgia- it has helped mould me to who I am today & helped create some of my most interesting paintings & will continue still for those to come, as life is all about the Ups & Downs - as soon as you learn to create during all these times - you will be far better off imo & create countless paintings - His own mom tossed out boxes of his work - one aunt didn't like his painting so she uses it to decorate a hole inner chicken coop! One family member used one of his painting for shooting practice - cowabunga, figures... "family" usually the last to admit to anyone having talent. I can't say the same - my extended family has always said I was the most talent artistically of the bunch (thank you) & my mom saved much.
