Valentines for beautiful little black girls!
This idea came to me while looking at vintage valentines - to try to get a few ideas for cannabis cartoons.. as it happens I stumbled across one of the worst Valentine cards I've ever seen & the only thought to enter my mind is "When is this EVER o.k.?"
The card mentioned was a 'black faced' little boy with a rope around neck (actual piece of string) - stating: Be Ma valentine.. I'll be hanged if you so no.
It seems black face in general was a "humorous valentine" - topic... why I don't understand.
Who the fuck drew that? How was that EVER o.k. in anyones mind- never mind the person who signed it, as a card creator I can't even fathom making such a card. I believe cards make people happy, spread joy - make us laugh & yes many are rude but this is simply racist nasty, hatred. It broke my heart to think that actually was seen by people never mind enjoyed by someone... & how would little kids feel who saw it? Black children?
If you don't understand the hype around Gucci's black face sweater - or blackface- do some research, it's black history month so the timing is PERFECT for education! Google images - or PIN even - black face images were used to 'make fun' of others and most are seen in a very derogatory way - The person capable of creating such a card(s) is racist & ignorant. Then after looking for a bit- I noticed how few black children are ever portrayed in valentines at all - in art! Remember the fun sheets we had as kids, sure there are animals, cats. dogs, rockets but very few black children. I always had black friends growing up in Toronto, I don't remember what valentine they would have got, although I was big on cartoon characters - so it was probably Wilma or Betty... still.
WTF?
I've created some valentines for beautiful little black girls to receive & give from other little black girls or white girls to give their black friends -(boys too of course) It's ABOUT LOVE
All shades. These little beautiful ladies are so cute- I enjoyed drawing them, painting them and will paint more. I was intreguided to learn of all the hair styles & the fact hair is such a hot topic, for example i LOVE afro hair I think is adorable and stunning on adults - men & women I never realized the issues around it. Black Hair braiding IS a FINE art - I can't even imagine how long some of these hair styles take.
Such ignorance can't be erased from the past- I guess it's good we realize it finally & hopefully CHANGE - Children never deserve to be dragged into ADULT politics or judgement.
Happy Valentines day! I love kids- all kids, all shades - they are the most creative beings I've even been fortunate to work with on this planet- the best thing I can do is CHANGE this Valentine situation - starting with the sheet for Beautiful little Black Girls!
