Chickens love pumpkins & watermelon.
Scratching, jumping, running - one step forward - two steps back -looks dancing, searching for bugs and worms. There’s white longhorns - the only ‘adults’ purchased and brown chickens all were raised from babies or hatched. The brown are very friendly and come running when you enter the pen, they also like Poppy & Ginger, but don’t hesitate to peck at them if they get too close.
A friend remarked “Chickens are racist” which made me watch closer & yes, they kinda are. They stick with their own kind. Our two tiny birds - Salt & Pepper (so sweet) stick together always. The 4 brown stay together & the white stay together with our big black rooster - they were our first set of birds… they also stick together depending on age. Two teens stay with each other & two toddlers. They are fascinating to watch & Im’ thinking of things to make for the coop to keep them entertained for the winter- like a swing.
I believe chickens are relaxing, a sort of clucking meditation… they all seem to get along quite well & I’ve not witnessed any henpecking, perhaps in the coop at night, still everyone has all their feathers in tact. The teens & toddlers like to play on our chicken pole’ and are often seen sitting at the top. Chickens also eat pretty much everything, it’s a nice way to get rid of vegetables, scraps & leftovers. I grew Kale specifically for them & they loved it. I can’t manage to pick them up but just watching them is a pleasure. Ginger chases chickens- which is great exercise, she doesn’t have a hope in catching from what I’ve witnessed but the big dogs on the other hand are not permitted in the pen - they have killed 2 birds to date, instead they run around the permitter -this is great as the little ones sneak out- but quickly learn to run back in as soon as they see the dogs. I’ve no doubts they could escape but none seem to have the desire to do so- I guess not in that deluxe coop…. Soon winter will be here & they stay in most of the time - it’s also amusing to see chickens walk in the snow.
I would recommend chickens to anyone, entertaining, friendly & they provide eggs - happy birds are calm & enjoyable to be with… just like humans. Currently I’m working an a ‘chicken run’ painting, this was just a warm up idea I found amusing. By the way - I eat less chicken now, I'd rather see them in the pen than on my plate.
