Félicette.’ Acrylic on wood
This Kitty is the kitty France sent into space. The tests they put these cats through were something in themselves…. It made me feel sorrowful just to watch them shove them into the tiny containers, I can only imagine (I'd rather not) how the cats felt. I painted Felicette - excited to be looking at space, but she didn't even have a window.
I don’t think we should use animals for testing - we didn’t learn much - other than cats can be shot into space.
I doubt the cat had any such desires or ambitions and would be much happier with a can of tuna than shot up in a rocket. Felicette was the first cat in space. It’s a fascinating and dismal tale…. It then had me pondering the dog Laika' that was sent up into space & left to float around -until it died, I don’t even want to learn about chimps.
After reading & pondering, this Tribute art was created for Felicette, the bravest little kitty ever - who never had a choice.
The most upsetting detail was reading that Felicette survived the flight & landing - harm free - but 2 month later was killed to see if a visit into space had any impact on her organs - the conclusion was :NO. FFS.
After her journey, she should have been celebrated & thanked and lived a life of leisure on a pillow, chasing mice when she felt like it.
Humans. What gives us the right to decide others fate - especially other beings who have no say - simple because they don’t speak human. We are all connected - includes our furry, feathered, scaly companions/comrades. On the flip side of the ‘coin’, Felicette got to ride a rocket that many wealthy humans now pay a hefty fee to experience.
Today, I am thankful for all creatures great & small, the Lord God loves them all… me too.
