What kind of ‘Love’ is important? ‘
Doing ‘what' you love. We were created to create! I love: to paint, draw & cartoon. Doing what you love is practicing joy. Time flies when I’m painting, sketching & I feel most at peace. Even if I start in a mood, once I get going, I feel great. It’s what keeps me returning to my desk & easel. Do what you love & the rest will fall into place, hopefully. Sometimes the journey of doing what we love isn’t all that glorious. Such is life, it seems. I like to believe, everything for a reason.
When it comes to classic cartoons animators & directors - Chuck Jones (obviously) & Tex Avery are two, I admire most. Chuck Jones was a creative genius, we are still enjoying & marvelling at his creations today. I’ll remind you, back then no computers were used, drawing… lots & lots of drawing, cell painting, filming - a long process to entertain with a 3 minute Bugs Bunny cartoon. I’m grateful for their work & dedication to the craft.
Tex Avery pushed the limits. Watching his cartoons, occasionally something wild happens, like a character running out of the actual cartoon, eyes bulging out of ones head, events that stretched the imagination & made the viewer think. Tex was a pioneer, exploring what was never done before & was never the same after. Tex (& Chuck) changed history with cartoons.
The toon above, inspired by my time at Sheridan (Classic Animation) & remembering my then crush, both Tex Avery fans, this would have been ‘Love at first sight’ - Tex Avery style. I laugh at the length of arms I gave my crush, must be related to some chimp obsession. Heehee
I’m also reminded of a new documentary I can’t wait to see: Spaz The Movie Another animation genius, Steve Spaz Williams - who created some of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park! He also animated ‘The Mask’ - where you can witness his Tex Avery influence. I don’t think the journey was all that smooth for Steve & that’s what the documentary will explain. I believe what actually happened was his creativity ‘was crushed’ by others - mostly employers. Every artist knows how it feels to have his creativity - deflated, only this is on a level most don’t & won’t ever understand. The higher you are the harder you fall - so it is said. I’m praying for a happy ending, I guess I’ll have to wait & see!
Luckily, for all of us movie fans Steve loved what he did or he wouldn’t have been able to create what he did! Steve changed the movie industry forever. Steve also made countless commercials, everything he created has me amazed with the level of talent & determination he has. You can’t stop talent like that… ever. Thank God.
Anyway - until it comes out, you can see Steve on Netflix - Movies that made us - Jurassic Park. Season 2.
Do WHAT you love & you can survive anything, mostly. If not, at least you will enjoy yourself along the way, hopefully.
Time to paint more meanings of love. Created to create.
