I watched Netflix- the Movies that made us: Jurassic Park
Steve Spaz Williams is an animation rockstar!
If not for Steve we would not have had the first moving, running, attacking , car tipping, human munching dinosaurs.
Steve was in his last year of animation & I was in my first. There was one night I was at school late... and Steve came over and said 'hello'.. we chatted for a while and he sat with me & draw me a cat - a cat holding a shish-kabob stick with a mouse on it. He was very nice to me and a gentleman - always. He always nodded in the halls, said Hi. I knew then he was a rockstar I just didn't understand how talented. Steve had a Mohawk and usually wore a white T & cowboy boots - his presence was 'powerful', confident... even back then.
While watching the special, I knew before he mentioned it- what a difficult time it must have been on his personal life & relationships. Animation is not easy and especially then- he was a pioneer. The hours he must have spent - more than most will ever put into their jobs. Animation was/is a long process, very time consuming to get it right as I learned as a new animator - unless you had the gift Steve does you started at the bottom which entailed years of cell painting/in betweening' others work, to get anywhere.
I only was there one year. I do regret my choices, I was distracted with socializing, parties and boyfriends. I was was not encouraged much by anyone, as a matter of fact I was discouraged by my then boyfriend who would rather I did not go to school - even thought he'd let me take his 'Transam' on several occasions- rather than the Go train. I could not afford to reside in Oakville - so the GO train everyday got to me as well. Still, I'm grateful for the experience & for my love of animation & the knowledge I did acquire, it kept me drawing - always.
Steve only spent time with me once - I never forgot his kindness at a time when others teased and taunted, Steve was kind. I was so happy to see him on Netflix it brought a smile to my face every time. Wow, I feel like a dummy today though- lol. I just realized Steves brother IS Harland Williams - I never put the two together, I just thought they were really good friends, with the same last name. Harland is a comedian and was in a few movies my favourite - Rocketman.
Honestly - this movie STILL makes me laugh out loud today. Harland was also in his 3rd year animation.
To be honest, I was at the time sweet on the 3rd guy from the left on the top row but I think he was very shy & blushed every time he saw me so nothing became of it.
I only went the one year... I was in the company of Animation & comedian rockstars - yes, I knew that, even then.
The lesson Steve taught me most - a few moments of kindness has lasted a lifetime in my memory.
I highly recommend you watch - it's really interesting.
I hope Steve & Harland continue to have great success- they've earned it.
