Every year I am asked the same questions over and over so - here are the answers:
1. How long does it take to make this?
My Husband spends the entire Month of Oct. after work & weekends building the display - but he thinks about it all year.
2. How much did all this cost?
Not as much as you think. My husband builds it all, every prop. My son and I help paint and decorate and we have been doing this for over 15 years, built up slowly over time. Over time I bet it has cost quite a bit - all the little details, electronics and hours! I try not to think about it. ;-) The food bank donations we get every year make up for it ;-)
3. Where do you put it all!??
EVERYWHERE. There are at least 2 rooms that store props! My hubby the Halloween Hoarder- a crawl space packed with costumes and bodies and a back deck built to store the outside props (fake front & gate) - each one comes apart panel by panel and all are numbered/lettered. After 15 years he has it organized quite professionally.
4. Is is scary??
Yes, I hope so it is halloween after all.. We have tiny ones that don't seem to be bothered and big ones that run out screaming - it, like everything else in life - depends on the person. BUT It is NOT gory. Not into the blood and Gore - more traditional monsters so little ones can still come through.
5. Are there live people in there?
YES, but they are not in there to grab you they are in the black one piece suits, more for protection to make sure you don't touch anything ;-) & to help anyone get back out that is too frightened and whisper in your ear...
6. How does it work!?
You will see a photo of a panel below, my husband is an electrical engineer and contractor, everything is hooked up to a sensor and a compressor. He also designed programs to make the 'props' animated - this makes them move, speak , turn heads etc. If he is around feel free to ask him about the details.
7. Can I go through again??
Usually on a sneak peek night you the line is usually small and quicker. On Halloween night- NO - sorry you have to wait in line and once out yes of course you can line up again *at the end of the line - up to you. The line takes anywhere from 30 mins. to an hour. Halloween night. Most people that come through on a sneak peek night - end up coming back halloween to go again with friends ;-)
8. What if my kid gets too scared?
The gatekeeper (usually me - Georgia) is in an area - away from the crowd, many times after parents wait in line for a long time - the kids change their mind! Rather than be responsible for nightmares ;-) I let the kids stay with me and help with the door. Parents can go through and then must come back to the entrance to claim you child from me. I DO NOT like it when parents drag their child through the display screaming. IF they do not want to go they do not have to go.
9. Can I use your bathroom?
No, I am sorry, the night is too busy as it is and we do not have the time to be letting people into our home to use our bathroom. Pee at home ;-)
10. Can I take photos?
Yes, of course! ;-) Bring your camera! There are even a few photo ops. on the front lawn.

Dr. Normanstien is in the haunted House!
This is My husband. Mad man Norm. He is also extremely creative & intelligent. He builds furniture, is the ultimate handyman but his true passion (other then his family) is HALLOWEEN! Every year our garage is transformed into a Nightmare on RosELM street! Hundreds of fans come through for a peek and to leave a food bank donation. The lines grow every year but no one ever seems to complain. It is A lot of work for one guy - we help when he bugs enough. But usually we are not as thrilled as he is. It takes Norm one month solid just to set up the display. It runs Halloween with a few nights before for friends and family. Although I do not share his enthusiasm about halloween, it is to him what drawing is to me. So I try to go with the flow. Hard to do when you wake up beside a vampire or find a mummy at your kitchen table. Horse testicles in a jar, mice in the freezer...
We do not charge admission - just the donation to the food bank. It feels fantastic to give back to our community. So have peek at some of the photos. Everything is animatronic, custom made to scare the creepers out of you! So if you happen to be in the Hood at halloween drop by if you dare....
We won Global televisions spookiest house in 2006 and trust me it is spookier now!
Check out the Video on You tube:

See the display go up...
Thanksgiving weekend the display goes up. It is a lot of work! I am so grateful that the weather was so beautiful this year! Rain or shine Norman get's it up. This year 2011, I took photos every 1/2 hour! In every photo you will see a change. It starts at 7:30 a.m. and he went right until 8:30p.m. I will add little details under each photo.
Such a hard working man my Norman.
It all started with one of our first dates.. we dressed up built a coffin as our prop and brought it with us to the party. Needless to say we won best couple ;-)) We were engaged shortly after and 20 years later.. Our first Halloween Photo ;-)
Then we watched The nightmare before christmas and it grew from there.
I would like to note - people always ask me - "doesn't anyone touch it?"
NO, (Thank God - he would be so upset) Well - someone did smash the Halloween towns pumpkins head last year ;-(
But other than that no. I really think people enjoy it and appreciate all the work that goes into it. Have a look .. no more sneak photos you'll have to see it for yourself! If you dare!! PLEASE remember your food bank donation.
