We had unexpected company! Normally, I don't go out with the dogs all the time, I just open the door and out then run, they know not to go near the gate or wander too far, Arrow is currently teaching Athena the permitter. When I call Arrow she comes running with Athena following. If it takes Athena too long she is tied to the lead - she is starting to understand, I can tell. For what ever reason I decided to go out with them and I am glad I did! I saw something on the driveway & thought, 'Storm is pranking me' - it was a turtle! As I got close it opened its mouth and lunged at me!! I am so glad I saw it first and not Ginger, who was indeed attempting a little too close for comfort sniff... it could easily remove her nose.
Have you ever been bitten by a turtle? I have, they don't let go. My bite was from a tiny pet turtle, decades ago but this one much bigger I think could inflict serious pain. I had to have 3 adults PRY that tiny turtle off my finger and that was that, for pet turtles.
I called Storm to remove it and was astounded at how fast it was circling Storm as he was circling it, trying to lift it and move it back into the forest, safely away from the dogs. Better in the woods than on the driveway or on one of my dogs nose. I would have liked to watch it but once the dogs see something like that, they don't leave it alone and I don't want it getting squished by tires. Not long after that excitement, Athena came running up out of the forest (close to home) as happy as could be with something in her mouth! A rascal - squirrel, with its intestines dangling. YUK. No dog kisses for her. It was funny to see until she dropped it on the dog bed, I thought for sure it was a stuffed squirrel she was playing with. The signs of summer... muddy paws.
Also arrived - in time for our first long weekend- mosquitos. For any venturing out of the city to cottage country, be prepared. Warn you kids about snapping turtles, he sure looked innocent enough, cute even - until he opened that beak.
They have a firework By-Law now up here - don't do it unless you want a fine (also no fires except between 7:30p.m. and 7:30 a.m. no mid afternoon smores.) Fireworks are only permitted on specific holidays, too many are stating it disrupts wildlife, no kidding. It also terrifies pets, many go missing after fireworks so I make sure to keep the dogs IN. If camping with your pets remember. In this day and age with forest fires causing serious damage (around the world) - not to mention putting the lives of firefighters in danger - so some can enjoy some 'night sparkle' is inconsiderate. Appreciate the stars if you want to enjoy majestic sparkle. Currently in Nova Scotia, they actually have a $25,000 fine for illegal burning! Fireworks when you live in a forest - it doesn't take a genius to know it's not wise or safe. I'm curious as Athena heard her first thunder this morning and was visibly shaken. Tequila use to hide in a corner and shake... I learned and will do with this pup as she is just a PUP, albeit bigger every day, when fireworks or thunder go off - turn on music, play and interact with your dogs, distract them & show them just be normal, no big deal... turn up the TV if need be.
Did you read - the post office is probably going on strike AGAIN, wow. As if the last didn't cause enough damage... I have already seen warnings from my bank and sellers online - items might be delayed. I already won't order, it's not worth the frustration - wondering, nor will any packages go out...be prepared. I also read how many are getting letters stating before their packages arrived - they have 'tariff expenses' to pay, I was shocked, the receipt he shared - the tariff charge was more than the item he ordered (over $100.) Be aware before you buy.
Time to finish this toad in his tub'.
Have a safe & enjoyable long weekend! Don't forget mosquito stuff.... I read last year vanilla and water in a spray bottle works. I'll be trying it this year, what have I got to lose? I'll smell good either way... I'll let you know after I put it to the test.
