What a beautiful day it was yesterday, our forest walk was wonderful.... until the black flies found us.
You learn quickly to breath through your nose when in the forest this time of year -and even then I am sure I swallowed a bug or two, as do the dogs- they swarm around them. The sky clear and BLUE vibrant sky blue!
Trilliums too have appeared, today I'll paint one.. it's how I celebrate their arrival.
Athena is learning & listening - she comes when called in the forest and no longer needs a leash. Holy giant.. there are days at this point I look at her an thinks she's grown! Since yesterday! She has also discovered if she can get Arrows ball - Arrow will chase her for it and it is very amusing to watch! 1/2 the time I think Arrow is just amusing her & IF she really wanted her ball - she'd have it. Arrow trails Athena daily... it's time to learn about the dog door. She's learned to go out - but does not come in, I'll tempt her today with special treats - hopefully, she'll follow Arrow in.
I'll admit it was a bit of a sad walk too... I can't stop thinking about those 2 kids in NovaScotia who went missing and they have searched the woods. Lilly 6 and Jack 4 have been missing over a week and now they have called in cadaver dogs.
The thought of them alone, in the dark, black flies, mosquitos.. no berries to eat, not that they would know which is safe to consume, they are too little... its heart breaking. My gut tells me they are gone. Police are asking that people do not speculate' but that's difficult... Why would they leave the property and wander so far away, 6 year olds know better, Im sure her mom warned her not to go into the woods. When Storm was about 3 I noticed him missing one summer morning, not in his bed or the house. After a few frantic seconds, I found him outside playing in the sandbox with the Great Dane guarding him . Just those few seconds had my heart racing, I can't even pretend to know what these parents are experiencing. It does seem peculiar the mom is not speaking to the father... I have prayed they are still fine, huddled somewhere waiting to be discovered. it is a reminder to all to keep an eye on your little ones.
My full time job right now seems to be keeping an eye on Athena, like a kid- it's amazing to watch her discover - bugs! Hummingbirds, bees and even planes - has her paying attention and looking up to the sky! Very smart. I' not sure I've ever had a dog notice or do that before. She does have a destructive tendency - I guess it's more curiosity' at her age and she has pulled several plants out of pots and destroyed a few shoes. Normal puppy process. it is physically impossible for me to smack her bottom (and I don't like to) - it would hurt my hands more so I don't, but she sees discipline currently as a game', Im trying to figure stuff out, I guess I'll have to lock her in another room, away from the pack to let her know - this in not how to behave. She also likes to sit on Ginger (funny not funny) but Ginger is not friendly and doesn't share toys - so I guess that's how Athena is dealing with her , she has learned she is not permitted to snap at poppy or Ginger, Arrow will teach her not to do it. For any pet owners - you now have unlimited resources on YouTube for dog training videos - there's no excuse tight time, patience and love that you can't have a well behaved furry friend.
I have a cowbell by the door Athena has learned to tap when she wants out- which she just did so.. out we go!
