What's the best advice I could offer any new artist - a new habit!  Start a new sketch book!
Get into the habit drawing daily!  A sketchbook is the perfect place to doodle, draw a little more detailed, ponder paint colours, perhaps even help you process ideas & emotions.  I started 2 for 2026, one is for my favourite 'Bible words' I scribble in with a pencil or pen and put aside to paint when I'm ready.  The second simply has tiny paws running across the cover - it's all things dogs, all dogs.  Easy to sketch and tons of inspiration - there's no "I don't know what to paint" excuse, ever. I'll show you again, when finished...to prove my daily habit.

The trick to be successful with this new habit - I leave my books on my coffeetabe with a small pencil case, aways available to be sketched in, easy access.  I sketch when reading, watching T.V., or just relaxing.  I doodle when I get an idea. When I'm not sure what to paint, I'll start with these tiny treasures.  Usually by the time I pick them up to paint, I've forgotten what's inside so it's often a pleasant  surprise.  By the time I've warmed up with these, I'm usually ready to move on to something more serious & time consuming.  I have often been inspired by older, long forgotten sketches of my own  to create new  paintings.

Some draw daily, instead of journaling. Artists have an amazing collections of their life & work in sketchbooks dating back decades. Either way - it's a great habit to start & will absolutely help improve you as an artist!  It also helps emotionally to have a tiny book you can scribble all ideas, I've painted angry & felt better -once out on my mind and on paper.  The quality of the one above is for sketching -not so much painting but it still holds well, 80 pages (from DeSerres) I keep my paint watered down and make sure I let it dry well between paintingings.

Take control of your health & happiness and start a new habit that helps you become a better artist- guaranteed.
Start today, so you have a very cool little book to look over at the END of the year, to see all you have accomplished.
