I foraged my first mushrooms today! The above images are the mushroom bag Storm creates & today I picked my first batch -fresher than fresh for beef fried rice and yes, it was delicious. Once the bag was fully covered with mycelium (as you see in the first image) Storm cut a slit in the bag, sprayed it with water and the next day mushrooms already started to sprout, three days later they have been consumed and it's on the counter with more already growing. These mushroom (oyster) have a nutty taste, by far a favourite in our house. Isn't it amazing what you can grow, when you know?!
Holy Hannah it's hot... it's noon and we're in now until about 5, when it starts to cool down, albeit we spent the morning on the bird deck in the shade enjoying a coffee with no mosquitos, which leads me to believe they also do not enjoy the heat. The front deck stays hot all day which even under umbrellas - it's easy to work up a sweat, doing nothing.
I read something amusing (to me) in the news today... Floridians are being encourage to eat iguana -'tastes like chicken'.
It immediately brought back a memory of when my friend Kat & I went to Mexico in our 20's before husband or kids. Walking to our hotel from a bar late one night, we were hungry, we spied a place still open with a lovely little patio and we ordered - at their suggestion 'Roasted Chicken'... it was delicious. We were grateful for the meal, the dos cerveza and the fine atmosphere. You know what it's like when hungry (& inebriated), you usually devour your meal which also tends to sober you up a bit. It wasn't until we had had our share and feeling full that we looked at the 'chicken carcass' more closely... That's the strangest chicken I've ever seen, I stated. Kat took a better look at it as well and we both started to laugh, (a bit nervously) "it looks like an iguana.." The meat is considered a delicacy in some cultures and is said to taste similar to chicken, it had us fooled! As I recall, we both commented that it was one of the best 'roasted chickens' we ever ate. After reading the article, I have no doubts it was an iguana & truthfully, it was delicious. I've not eaten iguana since and don't expect to see any at the Independent grocery store any time soon but - if they are a problem AND they are killing them anyway -why not feed people with them?
Enjoy this day The Lord has made!
