Man or bear... Bear. 8 x 11 gouache on white
You've probably heard by now the 'Man or Bear?' question going around on social media.. it started with asking women:
If you had to be lost & alone in the woods, would you rather it be with a strange man or bear? Most women choose the bear.. which, I understand. Many men appeared confused by this choice but that's because most men are not women and have not experienced the constant abuse, cat calls, stalking & rape by men they don't know (and some they do). I've blogged before, I have been touched in public by a strange man too many times- the first time when I was a young girl ( probably 13), shopping with my aunt and a grown man bumped up and grabbed my breast, my aunt Marnie - started yelling at him in the store and he ran off. When I was older I had men I did not know smack my ass (many times), buy me drinks and then call me a "slut/cunt/bitch" for simply refusing them, let alone deny dancing with them. Then someone started asking men. Knowing men: would you rather be in the forest with a bear or man and men (thinking) started to respond :The bear. WOW.
A few weeks ago I saw a video that really 'hit home'... it was dads being asked: If your daughter was lost in the woods, alone.. would you rather she be with a strange man or bear? After some consideration the dads ALL chose BEAR, and one teared up at the realization. WTF does this tell you about men and the current MENtality in society? There is a problem and it's NOT women or BEARS. Another example is the new series on Netflix 'Adolscence' that is making many aware of the current problems and how social media is contributing to a rising escalation is abuse towards girls/women by men - young men in particular. I've also been reading f a few cases around the world where young men are being tried as adults and going to adult jail. I guess so.
The thing with getting older & hopefully wiser is you witness a lot (& hopefully learn from it_... Im 61 and have men I have known for a long time, some didn't treat women so nice when younger & now I see, time has proven, most of them are alone & miserable now, go figure. Men behaving badly (they know the difference) should stop and think about their actions, how would they feel if someone was treating their daughters the way they treat women? I was reading about immigration issues in the UK (one of many places) and how rape has escalated since. It's common to see videos of women, one in particular was covered from head to toe and still she was cat called and followed by a stranger for several blocks (recorded on her phone) and not until she start screaming and pointing out this individuals actions, in broad daylight - did he stop following her.
Men who try and use the bible to justify their actions and control toward women are an abomination to the Lords. Do you think Jesus would be o.k. with how some men treat women? God didn't create women for men to abuse or control. FACT. God created women to be loved - we have all been created from love to be loved and loving.
I have loved many men, and love some still.. but I have also known a few that I would absolutely, without any doubt choose the bear. I was engaged to someone and when a stranger sent over a drink (which I refused) my "fiancé" later accused me of flirting and tried to strangle me, I had the hand marks around my neck to prove it. Needless to say the relationship ended. Sometimes it's not physical abuse by mental abuse where they wear you down, to the point you want to give up. Some times the men are not strangers at all but those we agree to spend our lives with to have a family with and sometimes those men turn out to be the men we should chose a bear over.
The worst fact I have read recently is Harvard did a study: Homicide with pregnant women is the leading cause of death.
That is truly messed up... so for any men wondering why women choose the bear.. wonder no more.
