I Love to Singa is a 1936 Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies animated cartoon directed by Tex Avery.[1] The short was released on July 18, 1936.[2]
Owl Jolson is the sweetest little guy, determined to shine his light! This is an adorable cartoon and not one that would make me think of Tex Avery, at first. Tex Avery came up with "What's Up, Doc?" I recommend watching all his cartoons to understand the lengths he went to for visual creations that gave him a cutting edge. Wild & attention grabbing and funny - Looney Tunes were enhanced & excited by Tex Bean Avery. I Love to Singa... is a tribute cartoon (often depicted in WB/Looney Toons cartoons) base on the movie 'The Jazz Singer - Al Jolson (who is still appreciated & enjoyed), this cartoon is endearing to many including us, Storm & I in particular. The way he changes when he sees his disapproving father - many can relate, especially toddlers. Dodododoooo.... it's quite catchy and hard not to pick up your step when hearing it.
I've always watched WB cartoons including when Storm was little, not that he had much of a choice but I could only take so much Barney & Thomas the train shows -so in would go the 'Bug's Bunny' DVDs. I Love to Singa' soon became a favourite of Storms and every time it played he would run in the room and dance the dance & sing the song, it was equally adorable with him at 4, albeit original. I safely assume countless kids sang this little tune and danced this little number! It's addictive. It rents free in my mind, the song, too many times painting it! Not an overly pleasant side effect of working an a particular piece. I drifted from the original backgrounds as the one with the trophy would have been too busy, mushrooms are in the original cartoon, giant mushrooms in the background as he walks along singing, oblivious to all, except his Joy singing! It actually sat around the studio longer than normal after I sketched it, I usually paint them the next day but I wasn't in a 'cartoon mood for a few'.
I'm not sure who's next, you'll just have to come back and see.... always on a Saturday, maybe.
