Inspector Gadget & Brian celebrating Canada Day 8 x 8 gouache on white
Happy Long Weekend & Canada Day! I wanted to paint a all things Canadian cartoon, deciding on Inspector Gadget. There were many to choose from and searching brought back many enjoyable memories of cartoons past. Canadians have made quite the impact in cartooning & Animation.. I'm forever a cartoonist at heart. This was easy & entertaining remembering all the 'Go Go Gadget!' memories and chuckles. I actually got all the parts when he was offered as a 'doll' at McDonalds (still have it I think) -the concept with all that was possible made him the success he was, that's the Canadian way... we are all Gadget in our own way. I included a few of my favourite things, poutine & maple syrup topping the list.
I love Canada. There's a shift in the air here, it's inevitable I feel... talk of Trudea being replaced fills me with mixed emotions - will the next be any better? Is it better to keep the Devil we know? I don't know. I read an article today that I agreed with mostly but it was disheartening as well. It's by Father Desousa, he states 'Canada smells like decay' specifically smelling of cannabis & urine - I can't disagree as I'm not aware what the cities smell like, I thought that was pretty blunt' in a negative way. When he talks about things falling apart or taking so long to build/finish, I completely agree. Politicians have priorities mixed lately it appears. Who is to blame - the people living & working in Canada or those calling the shots? Reeking of urine makes me think of homeless humans and they are increasing in number with rent's skyrocketing and less places to rent. This is happening everywhere it seems - in the USA and other countries as well. I wonder what Father Desousa would do to make it better instead of pointing out all the faults. People complain everywhere, Canada is a great country and I can't think of anywhere Id rather be! Sometimes is takes a visit to other places to be reminded of all that is good/beautiful/hopeful HERE. I can't justify the urine smell but as for the cannabis - perhaps because more Canadians are struggling and self medicating, better cannabis than alcohol which had deadly consequences. Perhaps cannabis eases their pain physical & mental & helps them continue on their day. He makes it sound routine' and frankly I don't think it is... again not living in the city, I'm not positive. Does it? Decay - the water pipes in Calgary have definitely got people thinking about decay.. Canada needs work. Everywhere does.
We do need to look beyond our own borders to see actual decay, struggle & sorrow, war, death, destruction and desolation to understand how good we do have it. I don't forget it. I'm grateful to be Canadian. There is a shift and Canadians are going to win over corruption, wait & see.
There is still much to appreciate & enjoy & give THANKS for, that's what I'll choose to focus on.
Bring on the poutine - I'm drooling already! Happy Canada Day Long Weekend!!
