Raccoon Signage - Acrylic on wood 21 inches tall
Say hello to my little friend! Ricky Raccoon -here to be a friendly reminder to: Please leave packages here.
He is adorable, if I do say so and has inspired a couple of other creatures (in my mind) to be created, soon. Ricky was created for a reason... I can't believe the number of times people have either crossed the 'closed' gate or stood there when delivering a package. There's already is an existing sign right on the gate that states: Please leave deliveries and beep, thanks. Yet, recently that's not been the case. My dogs hear when someone is at the gate or even hesitates in a vehicle at the end of the driveway, normally they just growl which alerts us - there's a deliver at the gate. I usually wait for the driver to leave before I walk down to pick it up, with my trusty companions in tow... easy peasy, right? Not always.
The past couple of weeks there's been a couple of incidents that I'm hoping to avoid in the future with clear signage (an attention getter) that is specific: Please leave packages here & it's sitting on a huge stump right at the gate (on the drivers side) that is hard to miss. The reason(s) behind this decision were 3 different occasions where people did not simply leave the packages. The first was a delivery driver who had a package and the dogs were aware and were barking and running towards the closed gate, they are trained -unless I go to see who's at the gate -they are to stop at the end of the driveway closest to the house & are permitted to just bark, for what ever reason Poppy (little queen ankle nipper that she thinks she is) ventured further to bark & terrify the delivery guy - haha! He, like many found this amusing & albeit Arrow held back (like the good girl she is) when this guy bent own to address Poppy, Arrow bolted straight for him! Hair hackled, full speed and barking a warning that is only heard at specific times, sending a clear message - What do you think you are doing to Poppy! or - Intruder alert!! The guy saw her coming, literally threw the package in the air, jumped and practically dove into the front seat of his truck. It was kinda comical and the first thing he said was: I'm so sorry!!
He said he has dogs and knew better, but Poppy was just too cute to ignore. & he won't do it again. Whew. I'm not sure what Arrow would do but I know she is fiercely, naturally protective of all of us (especially me & Poppy) & her property and she knows the perimeter, which she has never left.
The second occasion, a young (very nice man) had a package and was not sure if he should leave it by the closed gate. It was the same scenario, not until he crossed around the gate and started walking towards me that Arrow again bolted! He looked frightened and I'm not that fast so I simply yelled "Stand still!" He listened and stood like a statue and she circled him barking rapidly, until I was close enough to touch his arm, smile and talk calmly - she seeing me, calmed down and stopped barking. I told him in the future - Do NOT cross the gate, just leave packages. He smiled, thanked me for the introduction (I taught him how to hold out his hand -palm down, to let a dog sniff) seemed relieved and said o.k., he was happy to take eggs, which I place a couple of dozen for delivery drivers to help themselves.
The 3rd incident kinda made me angry.. a postal worker made a delivery and she didn't just leave the package, stood at the gate instead, so I assumed it needed signed for and started to walk towards the gate. Arrow running along side started to bark and the woman started to panic an let out a kinda high pitch squeal & scream "is she o.k.??'" that fuelled the dogs excitement even further, I told her she was fine but she continued making nosies and I just thought - WTFrig? Arrow was still beside me, she did not cross the gate and the woman handed me the package that did not need signed, why not just leave it, especially if not comfortable with dogs instead of standing there squealing. I told her in the future, leave the package at the stump, turned and Arrow followed.
What do people think? Do they think? I would not cross a closed gate, especially if I saw a sign that said 'private property' -no trespassing, by the way - these people that don't seem to understand the sign that states: No Trespassing, would probably not at all recognize the RED DOT symbolism that means the same (just saying). And when a dog alerted to someone on the property, crossing a closed gate, who doesn't live here charges at them - well who's fault is it, not the dogs. People have had dogs since the beginning of time not just for companionship but for protection and they still do. It's one of the number one forms of security, even police will tell you dogs are better alarms than many alarms as they see & hear & know and will alert you sooner than most cameras when there is an intruder. I have dogs because I LOVE dogs and my dogs love me. I have no doubts Arrow would take on a bear to save me. Police dogs protect and chase down criminals often being hurt while on duty, family dogs do this all the time - righting off intruders/attackers with guns, knives, bears and more - it's only natural.
Even in the series The Chosen, Matthew has a dog (exactly like Arrow) and it is left with his parents to protect them from thieves, dogs are awesome, gifts from God. Speaking of raccoons, Daisy found one in the middle of the night that was on my deck outside my bedroom - the raccoon did not last long. Dogs are natural born protectors.
I think these delivery companies should train their drivers to - not cross closed/locked gates & dog safety.
Anyway, I hope this new eye catching sign is the perfect reminder: Please Leave Packages HERE.
Easy Peasy.
