You know what they say.. everything old is new again! A perfect example of this is shoulder-pads... seen on all the hottest runways, big & clunky clothing. Currently, I read the '90s fashions' are the newest trend. How terrific to bring bak old clothing - thrift stores must be thriving (for numerous reasons) the hunt for a piece of classic clothing is just as fun as wearing them. I can't tell you how many times I wished I still had some of my T-s, like The Bay City Rollers concert T, Rolling Stones or The Police... or even my Mr. Bill T or any of my classic Mickey Mouse T shirts... sigh -gone but not forgotten. Well, sorting through another box from the crawlspace I came across a giant sketch book- full of sketches that I look at now and wonder: how did ever think these were any good?' Good think I did or I might not have pursued art as a hobby & sometimes career.
I considered tossing it but decided to give it new life by painting over it! My HIMI gouache (which I do enjoy) is not as fine quality as my Windsor Newton so I use it more for faster painting ideas and paintings that require less work & detail, it's also terrific to take outside - easy to transport with a wide variety of colours so I can leave all my pallets inside. First I cover pages with colours that I have an over abundance of - or just shades I want to explore.. let them dry and then go back and create something on top. I've made rules for myself: don't stress over details, explore different ideas & don't spend longer than 20 minus on anything... and of course - have fun. Enjoy yourself! That is what it's all about after all. So far - so good.
My sketchbook has already proven to be fun & you'd be surprised how accomplished you feel doing quick paintings.
Then I come inside and my more 'serious' painting waits patiently on my desk. It's refreshing to paint like a kid again and not give a care to what I paint. Got an old sketch book you no longer want - try it! It even gave me a few ideas for some new paintings. It's also a testament to the cover up abilities of gouache - as long as you let it dry in between so the colours don't become muddy'. It's overcast today & even a bit chilly - knowing the heatwave expected later in the week -I don't mind. I'm back at the desk painting 'Jesus in the forest- a perfect way to spend a few hours.
Side note... I just ready 97% of LCBO employees favour a strike... are they nuts? With Doug Ford making sure booze will soon be sold on ever corner in convenience stores across Ontario (& Canada) a more convenient way to get drunk, sooner than you can say 'Cheers' - the LCBO stores will lose some of that monopoly they've had for decades. I've known several acquaintances who've worked at the LCBO - all sharing what a great job it is (if you can get in) terrific benefits, great pay, leisurely hours blah blah blah.. kinda like friends who worked for the post office would tell me - and look how that's going currently. So, another strike for more money $$$... I think it might backfire. After all, conveniently individual corner store owners can't strike, they won't close so you'll still have a way to wet your whistle. LCBO employees might want to be careful for what they wish for... or perhaps that's the plan - all about timing before the corner stores start offering more 'options' - getting in while the getting' is good. Time will tell. I'm glad I don't drink anymore - one less thing to ponder as I pour another cranberry juice.
The only wasted paint - is paint that stays in the tubes!
Time to create - we were created to create & enjoy this day the Lord has made!
Happy dads day too, for all those celebrating.
