Chicken coop discovery

"Chickens are stupid and eat everything.."  so it's been said, I beg to differ.  Birds know what to eat and not eat.  Our birds eat well,  lots of table scraps and vegetable peelings - chickens are natural composers.  I've noticed from time to time, mushrooms grow in the coop area, on stumps and on the ground and from wood chips. Above is an image of a wine cap mushroom (edible) that grew in the coop and the chickens have not touched it, the same with dryad saddle, I've seen growing in there - they are not mushroom fans, like some humans I know. I doubt they'd eat any mushrooms .. they just know.  Throw in a cabbage, cucumber, zucchini and watch it disappear!  I love to give our girls treats' that indeed end up treating us with delicious eggs.

Athene is NOT permitted in the coop, neither is Ginger...  Athene LOVES chasing chickens - just like Daisy did (killed 2) and albeit Arrow did not kill or chase any- when she sees Athena doing it, she want's to join the fun..  Athene, usually a good listener - does NOT listen, she just goes crazy and chases all the chickens and I've seen her grab the duck (gently) by the neck.. the duck was not impressed and neither was I, they are banned from the coop.  Ginger, eats what ever she finds that the chicken don't - why she is no longer permitted.  I Love the chickens but learned a while back not to become attached' as they die and it makes me sad.  Everyone should have chickens as they teach us much and help with composting, provide eggs and even chicken soup.  I've not made soup from any of our former chickens but we have made duck soup for the dogs.  We have a couple of chickens that no longer lay eggs but I don't care - they are still enjoyed and eat a lot of bugs and provide companionship for the others.

Don't believe what people say about chickens - they are not stupid and do not eat everything - maybe those people didn't feed their chickens enough or let them forage for their own food.   I also pull weeds, regular (especially clover) and feed that to the chickens.  If I din't have dogs that would eat chickens, the chickens would be permitted to roam free as they know not to go too far, they know they have it good, right where they are.

Thank The Lord for another day!
