The Reluctant Dragon released in 1941 June 20th. gouache on watercolour 6 x 6.
This is Disneys 4th film released - as a short'. The DVD has 3 other short cartoons on it including Ferdinand The Bull & Johnny Appleseed & Goliath 2 (a very tiny elephant), from what I read the film when released was different than the DVD version. I was reluctant to share this gem, heehee it is not a favourite. I can't deny, when painting the dragon, I thought- he is cute lovable & kind. The reluctant Dragon - is reluctant to fight & kill - he's more interested in poetry & picnics. It's cute. The animation not to the scale as the first 3 features - but from the dates I can see & assume Disney was putting something out- while working on the next full feature... Dumbo! The film was released in the middle of the Disney animators' strike of 1941. Strikers picketed the film's premiere with signs that attacked Disney for unfair business practices, low pay, lack of recognition, and favoritism. It reminds me of Jurassic Punk - documentary - a tale as old as time? Same issues & concerns for cartoonist, decades earlier. Where would Disney, Warner Brother - pretty much "Hollywood" be without the people behind the scenes - who literally are the ones "creating"? As well as camera crews, electrical people... Actors also deal with more than they anticipate, it's got to be difficult on family life - especially for small children who don't understand "all the hype". Still, I am grateful for many who do share their gift to entertain & educate. I am thrilled & a cartoonist because of Disney, grateful for the introduction to my love, passion and now painting! I only painted one image from this film but already have a few ideas of what I'll paint from Dumbo. I am learning about each film as I go along and watching with wiser' eyes than I watched many, many moons ago. Seeing much of them in a new light. A sign of the times. - Wait - holy dragon... it just hit me- this might be my favourite Disney ever. We need to be the Reluctant Dragon, enjoying himself, her self - I don't know. Choosing to have tea, before fighting. Always. Fighting over what others "think", about how someone should be. Hmmmph... I might paint another. Time - to paint and keep it toasty', the dogs are not allowed out to roam, nor are they expressing any desire to do so. It's gonna get cold. Frostbite happens! A friend had a cat with no ears, found outside freezing one night. To pets & humans. Stay safe but enjoy all this beautiful snow! There are all kinds of activities happening, amazing trails with nice restaurants, skiing, wolves, restaurants - I've yet to sample one my tummy' didn't like. There are also many small business Hotels, motels, that usually come with stunning views & all sorts of suggestions on what to do'. It's a healthy way for a family to BE active & happy, enjoyable weekend! It really is a 'winter wonderland'. Canada in the winter! Nothing like it, eh! Be the reluctant dragon - Go have a picnic! Fantasia. 1940 - Walt Disneys 3rd full length feature Gouache on black -Night on Bald mountain.
Which Disney movie has the most nudes? lol - Not a question I think many ponder when relating to Disney but Fantastia has many, from lovely bathing girl horses, to flying screaming naked demons - picking up creatures and dropping them into the fires of hell, al in Fantasia. It is an artistic masterpiece, with countless different styles and mediums - including pastels. If you have the opportunity to see the making of Fantasia- it's as impressive. I was terrified of this monster when tiny, creating dancing flames -squashing 3 women in is hands - turning them into a wolf, pig & bear - then dropping them also into the fire. The monster on the mountain appears each evening and calls forth his demons by casting his shadow across the land- releasing the spirits from the cemetery, castle and towns. These spirits resemble the grim reaper, it's a powerful scene. It's also incredible- the use of light in this particular animation. If I had to pick a favourite scene - it's difficult.. dancing mushrooms, floating flowers, a ballet with a Hippo & Alligator - it's all spectacular as animation goes! Not everyone was a fan- they antic aped this Disney to be like the others and it is not, it's a showcase of the variety & talent of Disney from one extreme to the other. Let's not forget it was all accompanied by classical music, this movie was not presented as a movie but rather as a concert' - they even gave out special programs (I wish I had one today!) like they would give out, at the circus - a keepsake of the event. Fantasia is like no other Disney movie. As soon as hints of light representing Good' shines, you can see the monster & darkness (evil) withdrawing, as light is visibly painful to him & all the spirits return to their resting places. The movie soon ends after lights carried by humans in a precession becomes brighter, accompanied by Amazing Grace & the arrival of a new day! Hope. Disney invented a special camera to give depth to his films. Walt Disney was a genius, if you learn his journey you will find out how many times he failed, almost went broke and had many challenges & heart aches, like we all do - he preservers time & time again. He also employed & still does (Disney the company) - thousands around the world. Walt Disney entertained & enlightened nearly every human on the planet, almost everyone knows who Mickey Mouse is - that little mouse that started it all. I'm s grateful for that tiny mouse & Walt, my inspiration to learn how to draw. I hope I'm inspiring a few to re-visit these classics, compared to some things I've seen on television lately, it's nice to be reminded of true talent & art, instead of trashy time wasters. Next: The Reluctant Dragon... don't remember it? Neither did I! I have since watched & will be painting this week. Chop Wood, Carry water. 6 x 6 gouache.
Inspired by fantasia, I've painted this before but gave it away. Mickey falls asleep in Fantasia, after using magic to 'help' him with his work while he naps- things get out of control. How it usually is. I think the trick to life -is: Chop Wood and Carry Water . Keep active & strive towards making your own living situation better... no matter your financial situation. In my experience (including myself), most people appear to become more anxious when they have idle hands, when all they do is sit and watch T.V., them get more anxious. Painting, house cleaning, cooking, dog stuff, exploring the woods -all keep me in the NOW, functioning keeps life - FUN. Keeping busy also assists with keeping my mind off other things like over indulging -in food or libations, distractions in many cases. Napping while others do all the work - will not work out well either, in the long run. I like little visual reminders, they remind me to get cracking'. Today is Gingers Birthday! I'm going to paint her portrait to celebrate my love for her. Have a creative day - even if just chopping wood! Jiminy!!! gouache on black. 8x 11. 2nd Disney feature film created!
Wow- Pinocchio is 83 years old on Feb 7th! As you are aware I'm a fan - lol, I think I say this with each Disney movie-but some more so than others. It's been great watching all the remakes! I prefer the Disney classic over the new Disneys version. This film has many lessons on life - if heeded -you should be o.k. Listen to your conscience... moderation, determination & faith. The movie did not do well its first release because of the war, it did better every time after & has since been said to be one of the greatest movies ever made - I concur. The scene where Pinocchio smokes a cigar & turns green - Thankfully - the same thing happened to me many moons ago! I stole a (Dimauria (?) not sure of spelling) cigarette from my grandma & snuck to my room, sat by the window to smoke... One long puff and I was SICK. I still remember it!! I sure I turned green, my head spinning, gagging accompanied with instant regret. Thank you Lord, as I've known many who struggle with a serious 3 packs a day, deadly addiction. Guess what- I NEVER tried another cigarette, ever. I have tried skinny cigars, but was not too thrilled about them either . Yes, I've smoked several joints - cannabis has never made me feel sick - quite the opposite - so it must be what's in cigarettes, I have no desire to ever try again. I've always remembered that feeling when watching Pinocchio - I think it's good for children to witness. The new Disney version - with ALL the alcohol & adventure park (?) I thought was too much, it would only confuse little ones, or entice. I've already painted several Pinocchio, it's the 2nd classic Disney feature film ever made- and what an incredible follow up after Snow White. You should watch the classic & compare it to the new version - much the same but different - which do you prefer? Watching Disney in order - I noticed something else - there are so many tiny hidden 'facts & images in Disney movies... I noticed in Snow White, Doc exclaimed "Jiminy!!" : *An expression of surprise or annoyance. I wonder how many movies the expression will be used - I know it's also in Peter Pan. Let's not forget the classic song- When you wish upon a star... What will you wish for, the next time you are glancing at the stars? I don't wish, I pray. My daily prayer: Thank you Lord for your continued patience & love. Next Saturday - Fantasia!! Jiminy!! - it really is my all time favourite! lol. I have no clue what I'll paint - a work of art, of course - I'm excited. A Magic Apple! Gouache on black. 8.5 x 11
A Magic Apple?! - Yes, A Magic Apple! Well- who doesn't want a magic apple!? Before you judge Snow White for being naive - think of all our 'magic apples. 'Magic' is an illusion & it is used to promote product, for example... take this pill & just like Magic, you'll loose weight! This magic pill will help you feel better... perhaps for a while but they usually come with, not so magical side effects that can cause more harm than the initial reason you started to take them. Or how about... the magical vaccine that will stop/prevent further transmission, and keep all who take it from getting sick... How about that magic trick? With side effects that don't quite seem magical, in some case people appear to be dropping from heart attacks, so much so the CDC has now suggested there is a link between the vaccine & heart issues. Apparently' It's not a topic we should speak about - but more and more ARE, sooner or later the topic will be addressed by many as anger grows & awareness increases. 'It's not polite' to ask (when someone has a heart attack) if they were vaccinated - but not too long ago it was o.k. to ask (& demand) if someone was vaccinated - just to enter a frigging restaurant. Not polite No, just a very uncomfortable topic at the moment. As soon as the magic wears off... how will this illusion unfold? With much anger & suffering, understandably. If it sounds too good to be true - it is. Sure, it's easier to pop a magic apple/pill and think all your worries are over, if you want to live an illusion, in reality most things - don't work that way - it's not magic. It's research, thought, knowledge, time and often hard work that makes things happen - not some magic pill. After decades of taking antidepressants, since I was 15 - I NOW know, there is NO magic pill. Life can be difficult, stressful & not fair' but we must learn to accept these things & strive t be better - it's all part of the lesson. Everyone will experience bad times - it's about growing with each lesson & learning how to cope - not dope'. Cannabis (not opiates) helped me with pain, physical - it helps quite a bit with arthritis pain. Psilocybin (mushrooms) have helped me with 'issues' that have plagued me from my past (forever) - they were not a Magic pill but rather produced new train of thoughts- allowing me to see things from other perspectives - helping - me understand. My mom & I have had a complicated relationship, we have gone years without communication - psilocybin have helped me understand - nothing else worked like they have. & I have a relationship with my mom (now) which I am grateful for. I love my mom. We have been through more than most & both come out the other side stronger & wiser. No magic... & Mushrooms help because I've never taken them as an escape or to get high', but have only ever used with them intention to help me heal, resolve, love & forgive. Yes, it does feel 'magical' when I have love for others - who aren't always so lovable. Including myself. Wishing for love - don't try magic - try something that works - Prayer. I don't blame Snow White for being naive, we would all like a wishing apple - but remember her lesson! There is NO magic apple or pill or vaccine - we have to serve & help each other by judging each other less It has never been more important for the vaccinated & unvaccinated to stick together and rise up to prevent lessons like this one from happening again. - Now that would be absolutely magical! These vaccines were not tested long enough to understand the consequences. ;). One more Snow White on my desk - twirling art. Awww Bugs. Gouache on black 8.5 x 11. Saturday Morning Inspiration on Sunday.
Bugs bunny contemplating the Universe, tearing up with Awe. Bugs is not sad - he is overwhelmed with Awe & Love for the Creator! Chuck Jones - hahaha Just kidding... God created everything. Including Chuck. I read the only time one is to express 'Awe' is in the presence or awareness of God. All, can be fantastic, amazing, incredible - but only God is Awesome. I feel this way sometimes - looking at the sky, leaves, forest, flowers, creatures- amazed & in Awe. Awe of awareness of all Gods beauty & overwhelmed with LOVE, I too tear up & give thanks. I'll leave with this Awesome quote: See the love of God in you, and you will see it everywhere because it IS everywhere. Happy Saturday Morning! Keep your temper.. gouache on black. 8.5 x 11
Do you want to know, what I enjoy as much as Warner Brother Cartoons? - Classic Disney! Alice in Wonderland was just added to the collection, not watched for years I forgot how fantastic it is. This line - "Keep your Temper" - makes me laugh for several reasons, mostly because shortly after the caterpillar makes this statement, he loses his temper while explaining, what happens when Alice eats the mushroom, she is sitting on. There are many lessons for all ages in Alice, if you've never seen it, I suggest you watch it with the kids! I'm playing with paint & combining some interesting application with classic cartoons, a terrific way to explore & enjoy what I am already familiar with. Painting my favourite lines' from classic cartoons & creating a few art works is a love, love situation. I think I'll have some fun and paint them in order of creation! Alice is not first, it's actually the 13th! The first is Snow White! Just thinking of what I'll paint is exciting. When was the last time you watched a classic Disney? It's quite relaxing - even comforting.. try it. Created to Create Eeyore gouache on black 11 x 8.5 Keep searching.
I'm in a Pooh frame of mind.. stuck in Pooh? hee hee I have several friends all around my age, fans of Pooh. Memories of a gentler time perhaps.. I decided to paint a few 'reminders to 'put on the fridge' to brighten someones day. I am also trying too clean my pallets' I never wash them completely but they need some refreshing - why you are seeing brown mushrooms & now the stereotypical red with white spots. It never hurts to keep looking for sunshine! Keep searching, that's the key. Hope... I know people that have tried "everything" to ease what ails them, hoping 'something' will work - as it should! Not everything works for the same person & medication is the perfect example. Medicine will help one person yet, the exact same medicine can cause another person to have a deadly reaction/side effect. I have had an allergic reaction to medication after 1 pill & it was a frightening experience, I was itchy from the inside out, my Dr. told me to stop, immediately. We are witnessing this NOW in 2023, on a grand scale. Anti depressants are NOT intended for long term use. This is part of the problem & many Dr.s don't take the time to explain - long term side effects or cautions. READ the warnings that come with your medication if you dare... After reading the 4 page sheet on a medicated foam, that was suggested for psoriasis - I decided to pass, even though the medication was $200. The chances of getting any of the incredibly long list of possible side effects seemed too much of a chance to ignore. Many worse than the psoriasis, itself. Using anti depressants too long can cause them to lose their 'potential' and in some cases you will need 'boosters', which only complicate the chemical combination. Do you know what's been used for centuries to help people, on his journey called life? Guess... Cannabis & Psilocybin are two... there are many - even morning glory seeds have been used to help heal the mind. Research. The more you know the healthier you can be. We have choices. Try. You are never a criminal for wanting to "feel better " it is a human right and natural response. Remember, even animals will choose to get high intentionally, occasionally. Keep looking for sunshine... if Eeyore can look for the positive -you can too. I watched Alice in Wonderland - & was inspired... next. Life lessons - Can you bounce? Gouache on black. 8.5 x 11
Painted for an adult fan of Pooh & Friends. As I was painting the 2nd of this 3 part Pooh... I was gifted the animated Disney version. Perfect timing, perhaps I willed it from the universe, either way -I had not seen it in years and it was a delight. Pooh & pals are so sweet, naive even... Piglet gently reminds Pooh he can't read most words, Pooh driven by his desire for honey gets sidetracked into a little illusion, in a honey coated land. It's all about friends and relationships & the lengths we go. Tigger is my favourite, his energy & enthusiasm have no bounds -all bounce! When you hit bottom do you bounce back or does it take a bit? I admit, I need naps to help me bounce back, not to sleep.. more about meditating & rest. Water refreshes & reading is like a brain alignment .. all these help me 'bounce back. Still struggling? Sometimes it's a bit more than being a little tired, perhaps feeling down or have brain fog & can't focus.. How about a micro-dose of psilocybin? Others would reach for a 'cocktail to take the edge off' or some other substance.. 2023 It's come to a "pick your poison" & for some it's as simple as over indulging, in food. Which will you choose? I heard Joe Rogan in a clip that 'Nail it' - he remarked (more or less).. "we were allowed alcohol but not Pot.. then we were allowed Pot but not mushrooms, we have to wait for some old white guy to decide it's o.k... Who the fuck is anyone to tell me (a 53) year old man - what I can or can not do with my own body?" Isn't everyone becoming tired of the rules - rules for most but not all. We are allowed alcohol - encouraged even -yet alcoholic is responsible for more deaths to date -than either cannabis or psilocybin. Do you know what is said to help alcoholics? - Psilocybin. Research! Research is showing psilocybin is helping people with serious life issues -feel better. What is wrong with wanting to feel better? Psilocybin will become available - when -? When the government lines it up so that they can make MONEY. Fact. It's cannabis all over agin & it's just as shameful, based on lies and power & profit. If we REALLY cared about the Mental health needs of each other - we would allow for people to explore & seek out help rather than shame people for their choices or worse still put them in jail for non violent crimes. The quicker we bounce back - the better off we all are. One more Pooh inspired pal - next. Above - The adventure - starts in my sketch book! Pooh & Piglet - helping each other - Rise & Shine!Gouache on black 10.5 x 8
Mental health Monday! Starting off 2023 with FOCUS & Gratitude. Understanding, LOVE is our Power, I’m determined to spread it around - if only, with paint. We noticed, not a lot of people were raving ‘this will be my year’. Everyone IMO, is feeling (mostly everyone) a little worn down, overwhelmed… Schools now are being told they are to accept children, who identify as cats (for example) it has me concerned for the future of this generation, once they are old enough & reality will indeed, set in. We watched a teacher with gigantic fake breasts teach shop while his antics are making a mockery of Canadian Education System worldwide. Trudeau warning Canadians it’s going to be another difficult year, I wonder what lies he’ll get caught telling in 2023. Russia- is still being Russia, and although China is (apparently) rampant with Covid - our airports remain open (if you can call it that) but people need to be ‘covid free’ to enter…. riiiiiggghhht… cowabunga what a start to 2023. I gave myself a gift most might think - unimaginable, I turned my cell phone OFF & threw it in a drawer. Checking it too often, waiting for messages - that don’t come & it’s TOO EASY to be distracted with social media. “I’ll just check Instagram..” - easily turns into an hour (or more) scrolling looking at others create art. God has been gracious - & provided me with paint & paper & a view that calms the body & inspires the mind. I do have a landline, it’s much less distracting, like the good ‘ol days. Lol I’ll use my iPad for art, sharing and off. Created to create- not ‘watch’. This Pooh & Piglet are the direction I AM venturing - Rise & Shine! A positive start - a gentle reminder to anyone who sees it & of course - I enjoyed painting it. Next: Tuesdays - Top Documentary Day -Did you get a chance to watch - Jurassic Punk? Below, Pooh Helping raise Piglet up - in more ways than one. Psilocybin for Mental wellness - a topic many will be discussing this 2023. Heading into 2023... Pooh & Piglet gouache on watercolour 6x6
If you look closely you will notice I changed it to Fuck it - instead of Fuck Trudeau. Trudeau will fuck himself, at this rate. I'm listening to a podcast (Jordan Peterson) on how many times Trudeau used his power (against Canadians) for no other reason, except to advance his power. Politics that prevented Canadians from travel, work, visiting family - we were told it was science & it has been PROVEN it was JUST political - no science. Name calling, encouraging hatred & divide amongst Canadians -blatant lies. Many forced to take a vaccine (or lose their job) , a vaccine that would PREVENT the transfer/transmission of covid from human to human & we all know how that went. & if you don't... it didn't. How can Canadians trust Trudeau at this point? Boy oh boy, was this an 'eye opener' & I am thankful for the lesson - no more 'idols', go within, trust God. This is all part of the lesson, we are to learn. IF God, gave us all 'choice' - who is anyone, to take it from us? I know, am not alone. Watching Trudeaus recent interview where they show him & the crowds when first running for PM & the Now. People throwing kisses & hearts to rocks & Fuck Trudeau posters. I understand & agree with the protesters - Oh wait.. Trudeau sets off the Emergency act (which he still defends) on our peaceful protestors but states, he agrees with and encourages China protests. At this point, I don't even know... will it be a 'Better the devil you know situation? I don't know. I don't hate Trudeau, I am disappointed in myself for putting so much faith in him, yet thankful for his service & the lessons. The best lesson we all must learn: WE THE PEOPLE. I don't agree with the rocks or violence by the way (I do understand the anger) but there is some sacrifice that comes with this "job", added stress, complete loss of privacy, on behalf of his family as well. Not one of us is perfect - Jesus asking who wants to throw the first rock? Who is without sin? Yee Haw! Bring in 2023! I plan on thanking God for every single day, all day - every day! Pinocchio lies Gouache on black
Cannabis for joint pain, Pinocchio discovers he can grow his own & Jimmy Cricket is thrilled too… just for enjoyment. I was inspired by recent Pinocchio creations! Pinocchio is one of my all time favourites. Walt Disneys version created in 1940 amazes me, every time. The original background art is stunning, look at the details if you have the opportunity. The animation involved by several creative contributors to make it the masterpiece it is. The story - non stop adventure &life lessons… a tale loved by countless & it’s been told several times the past couple of years. I suggest watching them all, over the holidays, each a work of art. I’ve already written about Roberto Benigni 2019, version of Pinocchio, it was lovely & visually comforting, live action & animation & a sweet tale with a few tears. This would be my 3rd choice. Guillermo de Toros version of Pinocchio - on Netflix is my second choice - the stop motion animation had me watching in amazement! Fascinating to imagine the work that went into this animation wonder. It’s different - as in story. A little brutal at times, actually & Yes, it did bring me to tears. I need to watch it again - just to appreciate the animation. I think in some ways it’s better than Disneys original… which brings me to my last choice. The new Disney version of Pinocchio, Tom Hanks was perfect casting. The rest was as anticipated, terrific animation, visual effects on a Disney scale & the storyline much the same from the first version. I enjoyed it but there were a few things I thought they should not have changed, I did not like the character design on several in this version, but everything changes… even Pinocchio. First choice - The original 1940. Pinocchio, hand drawn & painted classical animation beauty, clearly - we are still watching it 80 years later. Snows on the way! Tis the season. Stay safe Tribute to Chuck, as I thought of him while painting. Count the different facial expressions the Grinch makes, each one so very clear to the emotion we are encouraged to imagine. One second you can see the anger & frustration as The Grinch struggles with the sled, his heart growing... to the look of Absolute & Obvious LOVE when understanding - finally kicks in.
Animators are taught to look into the mirror to master facial expressions, when Dr. Seuss confronted Chuck on why the Grinch looked like Chuck, Chuck Jones shrugged and replied..."it happens". It does. Look at the look an Max as he sits, pondering positive thoughts & images. The Grinch, you can imagine the next word out his mouth & it's not FFFfffestive. These will be the extent of my Christmas decorating. It was cold this morning, I was a wee bit Grinch an it's snowing. Another beautiful day to read my current, incredibly thought provoking book & possibly paint. The power of visuals is so important to children in particular, in the Grinch it's a sad second (some might not catch) as the Grinch is complaining & grabbed Max by the Scruff of his neck, the grinch stands there with his fist at Max's very sad little face, only for a second, the message is too clear. Wow, imagine those two, creating together - well, the results are evident. How do small toddlers feel when they see violent images, how did I feel watching Daffy blow his beak off? I think there's a bit of a difference between then & now. Images of Abused children, duck taped to chairs, on bags & in magazines, on coffee tables... they do see them, their tiny brain must be wondering... wtf? Many videos with filters using toddlers are on social media. Toddlers, most just able to walk & grasp 'life', just learning about EVERYTHING from food taste & testers to touch -fur, soft, scratchy, hot! No wonder they sleep so much - every day is tiny new brain overload. Imagine it - learning everything for the very first time. These filters are disturbing to most, let alone babies. The first 5 years very informative and important for a healthy life to follow. We manage all the information as we get older because we understand 'oh - I know that is only 'make believe', I understand how movies are made. Toddlers have no frigging clue how movies are "made" let alone Instagram filters', then some adult shows them a filter that has a giant fucking tarantula 'crawling, amazingly, realistically out of her nose! That is child abuse. That poor babies expression as she started to slap her own face - was FUCKED UP. How is that funny? This technology is so new and fascinating, look at that 1 example - that person has inflicted a frightening experience of visual trauma to that child. I've seen a couple now and thought "that's cute".. but after noticing all toddlers seem to think that what they are seeing, IS actually on their face, is confusing tiny minds. I think it should be law that children should not have their images online, until after an age where they understand it & these filters are messing up tiny minds. Parents need to refrain. That's just my opinion, I certainly have not forgotten that baby's face & hitting itself screaming, not laughing. At what expense is this 'amusement' going to cost children? Even the 'cute' stuff is concerning. Peace of mind, is priceless. Visuals - once seen can not be unseen. See that look on Max, that's how I feel - Loved & loving. God Loves me, you too. Loved & Loving.. how each of us has been created. Forgiven & Forgiving. Made in Canada… M.A.I.D. gouache on watercolour
Up at 4 with this editorial waiting to be painted.. from episode 1 of Futurarama’. I’ve been following news about M.A.I.D in Canada for years & use to think is was in ways, a blessing.. & I guess yes, it has been for many suffering from terrible illness where they feel can’t go on with the physical pain any longer. Now - I’m concerned (to put it mildly) they have ‘lost direction… Now, I’m starting to see MAID is like any other business & someone must be making money - somewhere. This editorial funny - not funny - is it the way of the future? Led by trail blazing Canada? 25 cents for a suicide booth - looks like Canada is going in that direction. In the future will Canada be hailed as “advanced”… between crap like this and our lying PM, I think we will be looked upon as ‘not woke’ but a joke, who would rather see people dead than helped. Reading of Canadians who are not well & suddenly, instead of offered assistance or help - they are encouraged to end their lives, making it easer for those who work FOR (& because of them, really) MAID - government employees can relieve themselves of stress & paper work & just suggest someone kill themselves. Don’t believe it - there are more & more stories coming out daily, like a family who is investigating because of how fast a mentally suffering family member was given permission to end their lives, or the woman who needed home care but after months of struggle- MAID was simply easier. Or the former olympian who was calling to see why her assisted living chair was taking so long to instal - & she was encouraged ‘if tied of waiting… check out MAID. Yep, looks like MAID in Canada is cleaning up. It is a business, who is making the $$$. WHO gives these heartless, paid, government employee, assholes permission to make such suggestions? Has Canada opened Pandoras killing Jar? I am a fan of Futurama - there are too many instances where the far off future is here & NOW. It's a funny - not funny animated series. Who knew this would be "the Future"? Bender. Time to enjoy this day & paint some joy! Created to Create. Grinchy grinch. Gouache on black
My second favourite Christmas classic - The Grinch! * The cannabis was an after thoughts & drawn separate, Stink, Stank, Stunk.. reminded me of some 'skunk. This warm up - inspired a set' currently waiting on my desk for Christmas decor this year'. A project by two creative Genius- Chuck Jones & Dr. Seuss - how could it not succeed? Any Warner brother cartoon fan can’t help but recognize Chucks work - the facial expressions and tiny quirks that we’ve watched for decades, for example when Max being yanked by the sled- ends up wrapped around the grinches head- a classic Bugs Bunny move. WB fans will also recognize June Foray - her voice used in countless cartoons - is also Little Cindy Lou Who. Thurl Ravenscroft who sang the songs & helped make the grinch the success it is - everyone knows the words, actually did NOT get any credit or mention - which was a serious oversight. Later he was recognized & acknowledged for his contribution - he was also the voice of Tony the Tiger. When the Grinch gets his nasty idea- his face becomes quite frightening, if only for a second… The never ending Grinch grin alerts us to naughtiness ahead. Another story of Christmas frustration & consumerism' turned into awareness of 'Christmas Spirit' - of light & love. Singing around a giant tree turns into singing around a giant light that lifts up & to the heavens. Who doesn’t love Max? The faithful friend to the Grinch, happily Max - is served the first slice of Roast Beast, a perfect ending. There is a new Grinch Movie, I will PASS on, an adult live action deadly, murdering Grinch. I saw one image from the movie & decided to pass - it had me pondering - what would Chuck & Theadore think? Winnie The Pooh also has a live action murder, action, thriller…. sigh. I’ll pass on it too. Making a Pooh Horror film is possible because, recently the original book became available from copywrite laws so anyone can use the story, as their own.. you can NOT use The Disney version of Pooh, as it/he is still protected. I don’t watch films like ‘that’ any longer, not from fear, or violence - I just thought (after watching something along those lines) how did watching that movie, enrich my life in anyway? Was it informative? Uplifting? Educational? Enlightening? Helpful? Or just 2 hours of senseless violence. The choice is yours- what will you be watching? Watch the original Grinch with your kids - let them see that heart grow until it becomes TOO big. Have a creative day! My morning warm up... the best Christmas special. A Charlie Brown Christmas. gouache on black.
What is the meaning of Christmas? Linus explains it's the birth of our King - Jesus Christ. This image is when Charlie Brown stops and looks up to God & is grateful... then, everything changes. Thank God. When creating this special, network producers told Charles Schultz to get rid of the scene with Linus speaking of God & Jesus & he said: NO. They use it all, or no Christmas Special. It is my favourite animated Christmas Special, next would be the classic Grinch... Tis the Season Next.. My 'frisky' gingerbread. Happy Saturday!
How many times have you heard someone say: Remember watching cartoons Saturday morning?!… I’ve heard it many times and 'how great it was'. A carefree feeling Saturdays mornings, I remember it as though it was yesterday (probably because I watched them a few days ago - lol) grabbing my cereal, rushing for a good spot on the carpet to watch Saturday morning cartoons, often with my cousins & we usually argued, as they being boys preferred the Three Stooges'. Ask me who was my favourite character & I have a difficult time deciding- Bugs, Daffy… Porky -they are all favourites - ask me who I don’t like, that's easy - believe it or not it’s : Tweety. Bird lover that I am, Tweety is not one of my favourites and I can’t even express why, it’s always been that way. Sylvester - love him, perhaps that’s why, poor kitty never getting to snack on Tweety. Painting this, I struggled with Tweety. He doesn’t look right but I have decided to move on. It’s just a painting, painted for enjoyment. It represents Life’ - one moment you are Sylvester - the next Tweety. It’s the anticipation of cartoons - the guessing what might happen next that makes them successful. & ALL cartoonists & animators who have come since, have learned from WB cartoons. At least Sylvester gets the occasional ‘taste’ of Tweety, unlike they Coyote & Road Runner. I think my next set will be round, along these lines.. with action & reaction images, with No Bugs Bunny, The focus will be on other cartoon classics as there are many besides Bugs. Who’ else influenced me, cartoon wise? Scooby! Snoopy & Popeye just to name a few & of course Mickey. It’s Saturday - Perhaps watch a few cartoons to start off in a light hearted mood. Cartoons - not just for kids. Really, WB cartoons in particular were often directed at adults & not children. One hint to this reality is the amount of cartoons that reference to alcohol. I noticed in one cartoon, Daffy Duck does a ‘strip tease dance’ (bearing right down to his skin) to fool a male chasing him & it works - as he smacks a kiss on his nose. Obviously this was not directed at kids. Watch again with adult eyes and you’ll notice something new. Grateful for another day to explore & enjoy. Rabbit Seasoning. Acrylic on wood (two sides). A bonus bugs I had started #10/10
What season is it? Duck? Rabbit? Elmer? This cartoon has it all including a fantastic play on words and trickery by (of course) Bugs. They team us several times to get the advantage over Elmer during hunting season. One side was finished a while ago (the cook book side) and hung in the kitchen, I decided to finish it as I have the rest. Look at the expression on Bugs & Daffy when the hunting sign ripping frenzy finally displays ‘Elmer Season… something tells me Elmer is in trouble. It’s been hunting season here, for moose & deer (I wonder if we have a bear hunting season in Ontario) & I think it’s now over, which brings a sense of relief. I don’t venture the woods in hunting season as you can hear shooting and sometimes it sounds ‘too close’. Friends who live further North tell me it’s so loud, they too don’t leave their house much, for a couple of weeks. I think it was last year or the year before a house was hit by a stray bullet, causing a bit of a commotion, understandably. Concern for my dogs running around is also something that I keep in mind. The papers warned a week before to make sure people exploring surrounding woods wear bright orange and use caution & remain alert when in the woods but my understanding is hunters must be cautious & aware. When I see deer, I fin myself thinking - I hope they make it another season. Living here helped me understand the whole hunting thing and ‘I get it. I have tried both deer meat & moose meat & not a fan of either, I’ve had many tell me, ‘it was how it was prepared’, a good venison stew will change my mind. I do know many people enjoy & live off of what they catch -a freezer full & that’s just how it is. I’ve changed my mind on seal hunting, now wiser in my understanding, it is a right of passage & food for a community that has lived this way - forever… Hunting in general is something I’ve had to ‘let go & Let God. A friend who also lives in the woods, once shared he thought he’d hunt.. he bought all the gear & gun, got his license & practiced shooting. Finally, he went hunting with a few buds & he was successful and shot his first deer. He said it was terrible, he felt like shit as he watched the life drain from the deer he had just shot. It was not what he thought the experience would be like and admitted it just made him struggle with his actions. I know the deer was shared with several, providing nourishment Many say ‘they would never shoot an animal…’ as they shove a burger in their mouth or carve their juicy steak, roast, stew, forgetting that an animal was killed because of our desire to eat meat. I’m not going to judge hunters who hunt for food, I eat meat. Many hunters make a point of thanking God, the Universe for their kill which shows respect for the creature & hunter. Either way- it’s over for another year & I’ve seen deer - enjoying & exploring for another year! As for Elmer… I’m sure he’ll be fine, it’s only a cartoon after all. Great point by the cartoonists turning the tables. Genius. Ho, Ha, Guard, Turn, Perry, Dodge, Spin, Ha, Thrust!!!
RobinHood Daffy Chuck Jones. Acrylic on wood (2 sides). 1 of 9 in a set. Daffy & Porky at their best, what an interesting relationship these two have. In this cartoon - full of Daffy antics & laughter, you really get to see the friendship between them. Porky is the sweetest I’ve seen him, sitting there laughing so hard - a tear falls, then the two of them laugh together (Daffy at himself) until they are rolling on the ground, it is contagious & makes me laugh to watch. We’ve all had that kind of friend, makes you laugh until you pee your pants. Laughing is the best medicine and these cartoons are a wonderful escape to do so. You’ll notice this cartoon is full of vivid colours! Pinks, greens - a yellow sky & blue trees but it all blends magically and appears very ‘normal. Take a closer look and you will notice the leaves are actually stamped’ as are the little red flowers. This is obviously an attempt by background artists to not only be creative but save time and costs (if I had to guess). I watch this cartoon for the joy of watching Daffy try to convince Porky he is RobinHood, Daffy forever f*cking up and Porky is forever patient & I admire the stunning, sharp background visuals. This is the last of my set of 9 that looks neat up on the wall, if I do say so. Want a pick me up? Want a good giggle - I suggest you make a tea, get all cosy & watch these two. I have the golden collection DVD set (all 3) but they can still be watched on YouTube. It turns out - I have one more just being finished on my desk today, I did the one side a few months back & it hung in the kitchen.. I decided to finish it, I’ll show you next Saturday. Created to create, I’m grateful for ALL those cartoonists, animators & artists who have created amusing visuals to raise our spirits & make us laugh. |
