Love is a warm puppy. gouache on canvas
My first portrait of Athene, I think I'll addd a few more chest hair and include her date of birth. The grass says 'Love is a warm puppy - quoting Charles Schultz
Dogs, you know I love them BUT... the worst thing happened again recently (and probably won't be the last time) a dog attacked a newborn in Canada & the baby died. Honestly, I couldn't even read the details. How sad all around is that. I don't understand how a dog could get at a newborn, when Storm was an infant, they were locked in another room (gate at the door) or outside unless I could constantly watch the interacting and he was never left alone with them. That being said when he was born we had a Great Dane -Dimitri' and I would leave Storm on the front lawn and he would lay beside him-if a stranger even glanced at Storm Dimi showed his teeth, making it very clear, come near the baby and you will find out if I bit or not. Now it's common to suggest "fuck around util you find out". I trusted that dog with Storms life, I have photos of him sleeping on Dimitri. I did have a dog that snapped and always tried to take food from Storm and I did have the dog put down because it would not stop & I could not trust it. I still wrestle with it to date BUT I knew what can happen in a heart beat.
I illustrated a book for kids on how to interact with dogs and if you have social media - there are enough videos now, for us to all see; one unfortunate woman had her nose ripped off when babysitting a dog'. Dogs can be dangerous & deadly. It's awful the parents will have to live with this, the dog was probably put down too. I have had people say "Arrow won't bite me" but I have seen a very protective side of Arrow, if she feels threatened or her home is, she might bite - that's what dogs do - PROTECT those they love and have been doing it since the beginning of time and still are, protecting against predators - 2 legs and 4. Rotweiller's in particular are loyal, protecting and great family dogs, butchers use to have them carry their money bags around their necks when travelling, yep.. lol good luck removing that money bag, if the dog have been trained to protect it. Training is key, just like with the puppy, it's obsessed with Poppy (of course) & I'm teaching it starting yesterday- NO! don't be ruff with Poppy! & it's learning.. I am taking no chances with it hurting Poppy or Ginger - it's gonna be much bigger than both SOON. Athene is playing, its not intentional but its paws are almost the size of Poppy' s head. No.
Love is a new Puppy but real LOVE is training your dogs & never letting your guard down near babies or toddlers, or adults! Know the dog, even then always take caution. I'll never forget a friend who had a Great Dane for a few years - one day she bent to pick up a drier sheet and the dog nearly ripped her arm off. A Great Dane - I would never have believed it possible owning 2 Great Danes at one point - both gentle giants. Never say never.
IF any kids visit, I'll access the situation & consider putting the dogs away.. IF I do not feel 100% confident of their interacting together, they won't be. As for people who cross the gate uninvited, that's another story. A few weeks ago, I saw an amazon driver running down the driveway (in a t shirt & flip-flops!) - WTF? I'm not sure why, I guess he thought the snow might blow the package away.. I thank God I saw him before the dogs & intervened! I am sure Arrow would have went at this person - not to bite but to stop them from coming further. We have already started training Athene: Do not cross the gate. If only humans were that easy to train. Love is a warm puppy, especially on a cold winters day like today , a wonderful snuggling companion - I think I need a bigger sofa. lol
Enjoy this day the Lord has made.
